School Children’s eye
screening program in North East India
About the Project
A recent survey of school children in Mizoram revealed that 18% of school children struggle with refractive error which adversely impacts their learning. Eyemantra.org launched the Eye See I Learn School Children’s Eye Screening Program with the aim of screening 20,000 school children all over the state of Mizoram. Launched in Aizawl, the capital city, in June 2018, the program will complete its mission by February 2020.
More than 300 school children underwent screening during the launch. The program commenced with the distribution of spectacles to students of the Government Model School in Aizawl. The program was launched by the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Dr. Lalnunthara, who also distributed the spectacles.
The core focus of the program will be on school children in the Lunglei and Serchhip districts. Located more than 200 kilometers from Aizawl, these two districts have limited access to eye care and transport.
The second phase of the program will cover school children in Aizawl, Kolasib, and Champhai.
